Death of a Traveling Salesman misc Essay Example For Students

Death of a Traveling Salesman misc Essay In the short story, Death Of A Traveling Salesman, R. J. Bowman is a successful salesman with the intention to get home after being sick and in the hospital. He faces many obstacles along the way. Even though R. J. Bowman knows that there is something missing in his life he has no desire to try and bring it into his life. He realizes he is only a salesman and that is all he will ever be. There are symbols in the story that show a shadow over Bowmans life. Darkness is the most significant that occurs throughout the story, and light is also a significant part of the story. Mr. Bowman likes to cover up his true feelings by ignoring them or literally covering them up. Through the symbolism of darkness and light, Eudora Welty shows the reality of the loveless void in R. J. Bowmans life. From the beginning of the story the darkness of Bowmans situation reflects the emptiness of his past and the bleakness of his future. Bowman is a salesman who is just getting out of the hospital recovering from an illness. An illness that is causes him to forget the way to Beulah. Driving down the road Bowman stuck his head out of the dusty car to stare up the road (204), this is the first sign of dark symbolism. There is a dusty residue on his car and he is trying to see out of his window, the window of life. There is something in his life that is cloudy, or there is something missing in his life. He is standing at the beginning of his life looking down a dirt path that only has one route, which is striving to be the best salesman he can be, and nothing more. Bowmans life has two parts to it, half of his life is happy and the other half is full of darkness and sadness. After his car goes into the ditch he goes to a house and knocks on the door. An old woman opens the door holding a lamp and he notices that the lamp she holds is half blackened, half clear (208). The lamp is a symbol that there is a part of his life that is voided out and not thought about often, or not at all. He is a one-minded person; he has his mind on being a great businessman and selling shoes. The half clean part of the lamp resembles one half of his life; the half of his life that is bright and headed on the right path, for example, him being a successful salesman is the clean part of the lamp. It is his lighted part of his life because he is successful. The blackened part of his life is the empty part of his life, which could in turn be the lack of being loved or the ability to love someone or something else besides selling shoes. He goes into the house and sits while the woman tells him that her husband, Sonny, will be home to get his car out. While walking in the house the darkness of the house touched him. .. (210), meaning that the darkness of the house had a presence of emptiness, which was a resemblance of his life. He had no idea why the house touched him, he could only wonder. The woman set the half cleaned lamp on a table in the center of the room (210), which resembles his life that revolves around this dark cloud over his life, where something is missing, something that he has never experienced before. The clean part of the lamp resembles the happy part of his life, like his shoe selling business and being a successful salesman. .u3b417ec1b22b5de26455c961454079cf , .u3b417ec1b22b5de26455c961454079cf .postImageUrl , .u3b417ec1b22b5de26455c961454079cf .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u3b417ec1b22b5de26455c961454079cf , .u3b417ec1b22b5de26455c961454079cf:hover , .u3b417ec1b22b5de26455c961454079cf:visited , .u3b417ec1b22b5de26455c961454079cf:active { border:0!important; } .u3b417ec1b22b5de26455c961454079cf .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u3b417ec1b22b5de26455c961454079cf { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u3b417ec1b22b5de26455c961454079cf:active , .u3b417ec1b22b5de26455c961454079cf:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u3b417ec1b22b5de26455c961454079cf .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u3b417ec1b22b5de26455c961454079cf .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u3b417ec1b22b5de26455c961454079cf .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u3b417ec1b22b5de26455c961454079cf .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u3b417ec1b22b5de26455c961454079cf:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u3b417ec1b22b5de26455c961454079cf .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u3b417ec1b22b5de26455c961454079cf .u3b417ec1b22b5de26455c961454079cf-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u3b417ec1b22b5de26455c961454079cf:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: My love of cooking Essay Being a great and accomplished salesman was an essential part of his life. Semiotics of Gloves free essay sample

A glove protects. A glove provides warmth. A glove provides safety. A glove possesses many different qualities. The presence of a glove in Cather in the Rye and Winter’s Bone is something that readers possibly overlook before delving into the true significance of the book. Once readers closely analyze the importance within a text, some realize that a small symbol can mean something more than life to a particular character. Both J.D. Salinger and Daniel Woodrell provide a divine illustration of how individual culture reflects the arbitrary connection of a specific symbol. In Kaja Silverman’s The Subject of Semiotics, theorist Charles Sanders Peirce demonstrates his specific knowledge about sign theory. He writes that a sign is â€Å"something which stands to somebody for something in some respect or capacity. It addresses somebody, that is creates in the mind of that person an equivalent sign, or perhaps a more developed sign† (Silverman 14). We will write a custom essay sample on Semiotics of Gloves or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Both Jessup’s boxing gloves in Winter’s Bone and Allie’s baseball mitt in Catcher in the Rye creates a concrete understanding of symbolic significance. However, it is essential to recognize more than the symbolic relevance while analyzing a text. The semiotics of each glove provides a lucid understanding as to why the gloves are particularly meaningful within the culture of each story’s plot. For the sake of closely analyzing the importance of the gloves both between Dee and her brothers to their father, as well as Holden to his younger brother, Allie, it is important to recognize that the glove is representing a deceased figure within both of their lives. Although their cultures run completely parallel to one another, they are also tied together through the semiotics of each individual glove. A glove represents the way you handle certain situations, or getting a handle on the problem. It can also signify holding on to a part of the past. In both cultures it is deemed acceptable to believe that in this case, Dee and her brothers, as well as Holden are holding on to part of the past that are now in the underworld. While Holden doesn’t express the importance of the relationship between him and Allie until a few chapters in, he gives the reader a unique understanding when he discusses his baseball glove. The glove not only represents Holden’s love for his younger brother it also exemplifies Allie’s individuality. It is understood that after analyzing Holden’s character he hates conflict with anything around him. He is confused by his brother’s  death and therefore fears interactions with people and is hesitant to let people into the barrier her has created for himself. This is seen when he struggles to explain to Stradlater his descriptive composition assignment. Holden failed to describe a room or house, and instead described the baseball glove. Holden gives Stradlater the composition and the conversation flows as follows, â€Å" This is about a goddamn baseball glove.† â€Å"So what?† I said. Cold as hell. â€Å"Wuddya mean so what?† I told ya it had to be about a goddamn room or a house or something.† â€Å"You said is had to be descriptive. What the hell’s the difference if it’s about a baseball glove?† (41). This is definitely contributes to part of his culture and how he chooses to conduct his life. The glove is a part of him, and to others, a worn out, left handed baseball mitt with scribbles of poems may not mean anything, but to Holden, it means the world because that is all he has left of his brother. Holden keeps Allie alive through the baseball glove. And although it’s just an old worn baseball glove to Statlader with no meaning, to Holden, it’s a keepsake of his younger brother, a memory that he will always keep with him. Allie’s death was definitely one of the most painful experiences of Holden’s life, which may lead to the root of his psychological breakdown in later chapters. Holden’s attachment to the baseball glove is an opposite connection to Dee’s association with the boxing gloves, which belonged to her father. The boxing gloves represent the struggle and the hardship that Dee had to overcome through her family issues. Raising her two brothers as well as taking care of her mother and fighting to get her dad back represents the battle. The novel basically denotes a fight, hence the boxing gloves. Now that her father is gone, Dee takes it upon herself to teach her two brothers to learn how to fight for themselves. Once Dee found the boxing gloves hanging in the shed, Woodrell goes into detail about how important the punching bag was to her. â€Å"She kicked the bag. The chain rattled and she remembered how happy she always used to get hearing Dad whip that bag, rattle the chain, make the bag jump† (188). Dee certainly admired her dad’s strength to fight and will continue to protect her family. When her brothers came home she says, â€Å"Another thing you two’ll want to know, is how to fight. I can show you what Dad showed me† (189). Dee teaching her brothers how to fight is passing on her family’s strength. It is not so much as a memory of Jessup, as Holden’s situation  with Allie’s glove, but more of a physical characteristic that is meaningful in it’s own way. Although each glove has similar signs that ultimately tie them together in order grasp the past, the context in which the semiotics of the gloves are seen through the lenses of each character allow them to express their own individual culture. Peirce’s work exemplifies the two characters and their diverging cultures and values. He demonstrates that in both situations the gloves provide something that â€Å"stands to somebody for something in some respect or capacity†. For Holden it represents his brother and for Dee it represents the continuous of strength and battle within her family. â€Å" I think it is all a matter of love; the more you love a memory, the stronger and stranger it is†. This quote said by Vladimir Nabokov is relevant to both characters and their situations and attachment to the gloves. Holden is attached because it is the only memory he has of his brother. And through the memory of her father and the fighting she did, Dee will put forth the strength in the future for her brothers as well as herself. The gloves of both the characters will continue to hold a part of the past for both Holden and Dee both physically and emotionally.

By placing his boys upon a mysterious island where is it? Golding forces them to explore the landscape. Earth, air, fire, water these shape and hold the meanings of existence. The four elements the four boys. How convenient it would be if Golding were to equate them! Piggy and fire? Jack and earth? Simon and air? Ralph and water? But we feel cheated. There is no one element for each boy because Golding realizes that even "primitive life" remains mysterious. There is no doubt, however, that just as the Elizabethans employed the four humours based on the four elements he associates personality and element. This association is more lasting than the incantation of old names. The four boys constantly touch the elements, whether or not they realize they do. Because they are bound to different elements (in different combinations) they battle one another. And they torment themselves in their desire to rule (or be ruled by) only one element. Throughout the novel Golding refers to the illusive quality of the island. Simon, for example, sees "a pearly stillness, so that what was real seemed illusive and without definition." Piggy peers "anxiously into the luminous veil that hung between him and the world." Jack peers "into what to him was almost complete darkness" when he first arrives on the beach. Because the elements are shadowy and ambiguous (and threatening?), they defy the vision of all the boys, including Simon and Piggy. Thus we have a completely ironic situation. The boys are forced to return to the elements to exist "originally" but they are so deceived by magical qualities that they cannot clearly judge their experience. Although many critics have complained about the gimmick at the end of the novel the boys are saved; the officer doesn't "understand" the violence which has occurred it is justified because it is another "appearance." The officer allows his "eyes to rest on the trim cruiser in the distance," but we doubt that he can see it or the water with full knowledge. Lord of the Flies is therefore a novel of faulty vision. Can the boys ever see the elements? Are the elements really there? Is a marriage between elements and consciousness possible? The novel is not about Evil, Innocence, or Free Will; it goes beyond (or under) these abstractions by questioning the very ability to formulate them. Global strategy of Netflix Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Global strategy of Netflix - Essay Example An evaluation of the environment of Netflix’s business is essential in order to undertake suitable strategies for the growth of internet based entertainment services of Netflix. Netflix’s business required the company to expand to international markets to take advantage of the change in lifestyle and entertainment of the households. The political environment and the state laws were important considerations for Netflix as they had to acquire licenses from the owners of TV shows as well as movie studios for streaming their services through the internet. The environment in the industry underwent technological advancement as increasing number of electronic devices like the cables; fiber optics appeared in the stores. This allowed the households to connect the internet to the household TVs for the purpose of viewing. The social changes also showed inclination of the customers towards easy access to the streaming movies and TV shows on the internet rather and reduced the crow d of the theaters (Fitzroy and Herbert, 2007, p.47). The internet based entertainment industry witnessed intense rivalry between the several players as they launched their services on unlimited streaming of videos, TV shows and movies to be watched by the customers. Netflix had to adopt business strategies keeping their competitive position in mind. There were new entrants in the industry looking to capture the market. Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video are the products of the new entrants that challenged the business of Netflix with similar services.

The challenges of repaying a student loan Essay

The challenges of repaying a student loan - Essay Example As serious as this information may look, these account still falls short in many ways and may not be a true representation of the present problem. Such is the case that Data collected and reported on student loan repayment cannot paint the right picture of the debt’s effects on economy (Suze Ormans). For instance, let’s consider the data showing how many people are presently struggling with payment of their student loans. Presently such statistic is measured by mere prediction, a factor that openly shows how students struggle with loan repayment. Based on the information gathered till this point, it is obvious that much attention on loan repayment burden is needed. This may be explained basing on the following reasons. To begin with, more students today are borrowing large sums of money for their collage than before. Close to 2/3 of baccalaureate recipients today graduate with loan burden and their burden has greatly risen in the past decade on account of inflation. It is true that borrowing will always increase even with a gradual rise in tuition level. Second, borrower’s payment rate is continually rising as interest rates increase. A good example is the federal consolidation loan availed in 2004-05. This loan earned interest at a rate of 3% or even below for some students, a factor that reprieved many borrowers known to be struggling with paying back. Borrowers today have no such privileges; instead, a 6.8% interest rate was introduced on federal student loans. This change meant that the loan repayment would take 10 years and earn 20% more compared to previous years (Dept. of Education, Office of Student Financial Assistance, pg 45). Additionally, this change meant that some students would be left out because of the aggregate loan restrictions in the loan programs offered by federal government leaving them with no other option but to borrow the expensive private loans. The third reason closely relates to
